What is mySQL?

mySQL is a widely used database format, often used in conjunction with PHP to create dynamically generated web sites. It is part of the very successful open source movement and does not cost anything to be installed on your web server. Most Unix/Linux servers already have this installed which makes it very usable and widely available.

Windows servers, which are typically more expensive per month, use a different SQL database known as MSSQL.
